Wellness State

Wellness State is a peer health education program specifically developed to address the health issues of the freshman student at OSU.  The educational programs are designed to integrate health education and technology in the classroom.

Student Information

After you finish your Share the WEALTH you may apply to become a PAID facilitator in the Wellness State program and deliver peer health education programs specifically designed for Freshman Orientation courses.  

The topics addressed include:

  • Alcohol Education focuses on the laws/regulations related to alcohol use, how alcohol affects the body, and the norms on our campus.

  • Eating Disorders/Body Image focuses on the media’s impact on body image, healthy body image, and eating disorders.

  • Nutrition focuses on general nutrition, healthy eating on and off campus, the use of MyPlate, and understanding food labels.

  • Personal Safety addresses avoidable risk factors for safety prevention including personal assault, injury prevention, alcohol related injuries, and bicycle safety.

  • Physical Activity focuses on the components of physical activity, including barriers to becoming physically active and benefits of establishing and maintaining healthy levels of physical activity.

  • Sexual Health focuses on symptoms, risks, and treatments of sexually transmitted infections and HIV, prevention, and coping with sexual pressure.

  • Stress Management focuses on how stress affects you as a college student and what you can do to cope with it.

  • Tobacco discusses the diseases and risks associated with tobacco use, the benefits of cessation, and resources available for those wanting to quit.

The main purpose of this program is to integrate technology and health education in the classroom.  The presentations offered are similar in nature to the Share the WEALTH programs in that they are fun, interactive, and educational.

Instructor Information

Wellness State is a peer health education program designed to integrate technology with health education in the classroom. The modules are created specifically for freshman, and content is consistent with:

  • Student health issues and concerns on the OSU campus.
  • Areas of foucs outlined by the Centers for Disease Control. 

Each module is composed of two components: 

  1. An internet-based assignment students complete prior to the classroom session.  The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with a base knowledge of the module to be presented in the classroom in order to facilitate participation and discussion. 

  2. An interactive and educational session presented by OSU student facilitators.  Each session is designed to last one class period in duration.

The topics of the modules include:

Alcohol

  • Understand the effects and the risks associated with alcohol consumption.
  • Describe the use and alcohol abuse trends in college students including costs of alcohol.
  • Describe guidelines for low risk drinking choices.
  • Describe the treatment methods for alcoholism and alcohol poisoning.

Body Image

  • Identify signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating.
  • Name several risk factors associated with the development of an eating disorder.
  • Define treatment methods for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating.
  • Understand what to do and how to help someone who has an eating disorder.

Nutrition

  • Understand MyPlate and its application in daily life
  • Make a personal nutrition plan using the MyPlate as a guide.
  • Know the Dietary Guidelines.
  • Find healthy food in Stillwater and on the Oklahoma State University campus.

Physical Activity

  • Describe the benefits and barriers of physical activity.
  • Identify the three components of physical activity.
  • Understand the guidelines and techniques for developing cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength and endurance, and flexibility.
  • Identify places on campus and in Stillwater where one can be physically active.

Safety (Presented by the OSU Police)

  • Be familiar with avoidable risk factors for personal assault, rape and/or theft
  • Understand how to avoid personal victimization.
  • Describe procedures you or someone you know should follow after a rape or assault has occurred.
  • Understand how alcohol contributes to personal injury and legal problems.
  • Describe various methods of bicycle safety

Sexual Health

  • Understand the symptoms, risks, and treatments for sexually transmitted infections (STI), including HIV.
  • Know how to protect themselves from contracting a sexually transmitted infection or unplanned pregnancy.
  • Demonstrate skills on how to handle sexual pressure.
  • Identify alternate methods of accessing appropriate sources of health care for young pregnant women.

Stress Management

  • Explain what stress is and how people react to it physiologically, emotionally and behaviorally.
  • Identify sources of stress and recognize warning signs.
  • Become acquainted with various stress reduction techniques.
  • Develop a step-by-step plan for successfully managing stress in your life.

Tobacco

  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of different tobacco cessation methods.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages to your body before and after tobacco use.
  • Discuss the various resources OSU has to offer students with a tobacco dependency.
  • Explain campus tobacco policies.
